The internet works very differently then most people think. When you send an email, photos or anything on the Internet it divides itself into packets so it can relocate itself into the recepients device.
But how does information travel to the right devices??
Well every device has an IP address or email addresses etc that is only for that certain user/device. The router manages the packets of information (the packets turn into electrical signals or optical signals), and dispurses it to a network provider/providers through Fiber Optic Cables or copper wire. e.g - If you were sending an email(using Gmail) to your friend that uses a "yahoo" (network/mail provider) email address. The packets will travel through cables and wires from gmail provider to a yahoo provider. Gmail searches the IP address of yahoo using DNS. It is like using a phone book.
